Why should I wear disposable isolation gowns?

Isolation gown is mainly for medical personnel to avoid contamination by blood, body fluids, and other contaminating substances, also can be used to protect patients from infection, commonly used in contact with patients with infectious diseases transmitted by contact medical personnel, some ICU, NICU medical personnel will also wear isolation gown.

What is the difference between protective gowns and isolation gowns?

Protective clothing is mainly used to prevent healthcare workers from being infected when they come into contact with patients with infectious diseases of category A or infectious diseases managed by category A.

How should I choose a disposable isolation gown?

Healthcare workers can choose a gown and model based on how they come into contact with the patient, including exposure to infectious materials, and the potential for the gown to block blood and body fluids.

Of note is the standard for protective capacity, the FDA recognizes the levels of protection introduced by ANSI/AAMIPB70, a consensus standard jointly developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Devices (AAMI). According to the standard outlined by ANSI/AAMIPB70, there are four levels of protection for barrier garments, in order of risk level.

Level 1 is the lowest level of protection. It describes surgical gowns and other protective apparel that demonstrate the ability to resist liquid penetration in one laboratory test (AATCC 42, Water Resistance: Impact Penetration Test).

Level 2 provides slightly higher barrier protection than Level 1. It describes surgical gowns and other protective apparel that demonstrate the ability to resist liquid penetration in two laboratory tests: AATCC 42 and AATCC 127 (Water Resistance: Hydrostatic Pressure Test).

Level 3 provides good fluid barrier protection, but is not considered impervious. It describes surgical gowns and other protective apparel that demonstrate the ability to resist liquid penetration in two laboratory tests: AATCC 42 and AATCC 127. For Level 3, the test criterion for AATCC 127 performance is set at a higher value than for Level 2.

Level 4 provides the highest level of barrier protection: an impervious barrier, in the entire critical zone, including any seams or other attachments, such as the front belt on a gown, that are in the critical zone. It describes surgical gowns and protective apparel that demonstrate the ability to resist liquid and viral penetration in the laboratory test ASTM F1671.

Only Levels 3 and 4 are considered suitable for use as surgical gowns. Levels 1 and 2 are only suitable for use as isolation gowns in low-risk situations. Most level 2 barrier gowns are disposable and are available in a variety of plastic materials, such as CPE, polypropylene (PP), or polyethylene (PE). SMS fabric for giving disposable barrier gowns is made of polypropylene and manufactured using a spun-bond/melt blown/spunbond (SMS) process, similar to the fabric used in face masks. SMS fabric is breathable while providing adequate protection against fluid injection.
